Flute- smallest instrument, sound is made by blowing air over a hole in the mouthpiece. known for is sweet bird like sound.
Oboe*- double reed instrument sound is made by blowing through two pieces of cane that vibrate and produce sound. Known for its reedy, piercing sound. Difficult but rewarding.
Clarinet- A single reed instrument. sound is made by blowing air through mouth piece with single cane reed. Known for its warm sound and large range.
Bass Clarinet*- Like the clarinet but bigger and lower sound. known for it's deep, rich and warm sound.
Bassoon*- a double reed instrument like the oboe but much larger. Known for its rich, mellow and slightly buzzy sound.
Saxophone*- A single reed instrument sound is made by blowing air through mouth piece with single cane reed. There are 3 common types of saxophones in a concert band. Alto, the smallest and highest, Tenor slightly larger and lower and Bari which is the largest and lowest of the commonly seen saxophones.
Trumpet- the smallest and most well known of the brass instruments. Sound is made by buzzing into a metal mouthpiece. Known for its bright, metallic and piercing sound.
French Horn*- A much mellower cousin to the trumpet. The sound is made by buzzing into a metal mouthpiece and pitch and sound quality is controlled by placing you hand in the bell of the instrument. Known for its rich, warm sound and extended range. Notoriously difficult but incredibly rewarding to play.
Trombone- The only instrument in the brass family to have a slide instead of valves. The sound is made by buzzing into a metal mouthpiece and pitches are changed by moving the slide into different positions. Known for its brassy, powerful and full sound.
Baritone- A much smaller cousin to the tuba. The sound is made by buzzing into a metal mouthpiece. Known for its deep, warm and mellow sound.
Tuba*- The largest instrument in the concert band and arguably the most important. The tuba is the lowest instrument and the grounding point for the rest of the band. The sound is made by buzzing into a metal mouthpiece. Known for its low, full and powerful sound.
Mallet Percussion- Also known as keyboard percussion. These pitched instruments are laid out like a keyboard and are played by hitting mallets against the bars of the instrument. Examples include; glockenspiel, marimba and xylophone
Auxiliary Percussion- Often small unpitched instruments that are shaken, hit, or tapped either with your hand or a stick/mallet. Example include; triangle, tambourine, shaker, and maracas.
Drum/Cymbal Percussion- The most recognizable percussion family. These instruments are usually unpitched drums or cymbals that are hit with a stick or mallet to produce sound.
Percussionist usually play all of the above types of percussion
Bass- A four stringed guitar either electric or upright*. Sound is produced by plucking or bowing the strings of the guitar. Electric bass needs an amplifier to produce the sound.
